Jewellery Care Guide

We all need a little extra care sometimes, and your jewellery is no different. Your new piece of jewellery is high quality but also delicate by nature. Like you, we want your jewellery to last and by following these simple steps you’ll be on your way.

Everyday Wear
Take care when wearing your favourite jewellery pieces throughout the day. To keep your jewellery looking its best, use the golden rule of last on, first off. When dressing, make your jewellery the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Take special care when removing jackets and jumpers as your jewellery may get caught, causing damage to your special piece.

Care
To ensure the longevity of your jewellery, remember to treat it with care. Avoid wearing your jewellery while sleeping, bathing, swimming, or exercising to prevent damage or tarnishing. Always apply perfumes and hairspray before putting on your jewellery, adhering to the last on, first off rule. Remember, silver is a malleable (soft) metal, so be gentle with earring posts, clasps, and rings as they can bend or break under excessive force. Gemstones can also scratch, crack, or chip if dropped. To get your jewellery looking like new again, shop our jewellery care kit.

Storage
When not wearing your jewellery, ensure all pieces are individually stored to avoid tangling and knotting. For long-term storage, we suggest keeping your jewellery in an airtight container.

Cleaning
Due to a natural reaction to chemicals in the atmosphere, heat, and body oils, sterling silver can tarnish and oxidise. Discolouration can usually be removed by gently rubbing with a good quality jewellery cleaning cloth like the one in our jewellery care kit.

SPECIFIC JEWELLERY CARE

Some jewellery requires more care than others, and you must know how to take care of these special pieces. Below are specific care guidelines for different materials and shapes.

Use a silver cleaning solution like our Silver Sparkle to remove areas of tarnish on your jewellery. Use a small brush to clean behind settings and delicate areas. Polish to a high shine with a silver polishing cloth.

Caring for gold and rose gold plated jewellery requires a gentle touch to preserve the layer of plating and prevent it from wearing off. Use a non-silver cloth or microfibre cloth to gently wipe the surface of the jewellery to help remove any oils, sweat, or other residue. For a deeper clean, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with lukewarm water, dip the cloth into the solution and gently wipe the jewellery.

Depending on the type of gem, care may vary.

Diamonds and hard gems (e.g. sapphires and rubies) can tolerate more frequent cleaning with a soft brush and mild detergent.

Soft gems (e.g. opal, pearl, turquoise) should only be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with water. Avoid soap and harsh chemicals.

Porous gems (e.g. emeralds) should not be soaked in water. Use a damp cloth for cleaning and thoroughly dry.

Exercise great care when opening huggies. Huggies are released from the back of your ear. To release the post, gently press down on it with your nail where it connects to the back of the huggies. Avoid pulling the front of the huggies away from the back, as this can damage the post and hinge.

It's best to clean oxidised silver with a soft cleaning cloth – do not use silver dip as this will remove the oxidisation.

Caring for jewellery with a matte finish requires specific techniques to maintain its unique texture and appearance. Do not use polishing cloths, brushes, or any abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the matte finish and create shiny spots.
